KUCHING: Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn hopes to see more new writers, particularly in coming out with specialised books.
Speaking at a press conference to announce an upcoming book fair, he said as Sarawak was targeting to be a developed state by 2030, he would like to see students getting into scientific subjects written by new writers.
“We want to create an interest among the young children to read more specialised books such as on science,” said the Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development.
On the book fair, which is from Nov 24-27, Sagah said it was the first time such an event would be held in Kuching at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak (Sarawak State Library).
“We will be highlighting all the written works in whatever category whether it’s in print or in digital form from within the country and from overseas.
“There will be 12 participants from bookstores, book companies and book publishers from Kuching, Kuala Lumpur and one international publisher.”
He added that reading was very important as it could evoke all sorts of emotions in the reader and “if anyone is interested in making money, they can also learn how by reading books on the subject.”
“Reading can entertain us, it can make us laugh, cry, make us feel sad and we can also read books on how to make money.
“Reading can also bring relaxation to a sick person and it can also give more confidence to someone with low self esteem such as how to present themselves.
“Of course, there are stories in digital forms but by having printed reading material, we can keep it and even collect it as a collector’s item,” he added.
He encouraged the public to visit the book fair as besides the exhibits, there would also be performances by buskers, movie nights and motivational talks.
“The public can also meet the authors in person. I want to encourage more Sarawakians to write and it is really a passion. A person who writes must have the passion.”
He commended Pustaka Negeri Sarawak and hoped more people would register themselves as members to make full use of the library’s facilities.
