KUCHING: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) candidate for Santubong Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri has clarified that she has not encountered any sexist remarks about her involvement in politics.
The caretaker Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture said this was thanks to the pivotal role played by the Premier in supporting women politicians.
“Sarawak is open and liberal, and the leaders have played a very important role in making sure women are involved in politics.
“This includes Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, who has ensured that the women candidate must be retained, in terms of the number of seats and the quota of women involved in politics.
“Otherwise, there will be no women representative for the people. So we are blessed with leaders who allow women to play their part,” she said this when met by the reporters during the Sarawakku Sayang programme at Kampung Telaga Air, here today (Nov 13).
Nancy was asked if she had experienced harassment or sexist remarks during her time in politics.
“So far, no I have not experienced experiences such as that and I think the Premier has played an important role in that,” she pointed out .
On another note, she said she is committed to working hard and trying her best to meet all people on the ground in three state assembly constituencies under Santubong parliamentary constituency.
“It is my first time as a candidate for Santubong and that is why I have to go around to introduce myself, but time is just too short to go to every village, but I try to meet them physically,” he said.
She also said nothing is guaranteed and every election is a very challenging election where candidates cannot take for granted that they will win.
“Although the people seem to be with you, the minute you cause a bit of a hiccup, then it could destroy everything. So for me, I have to work very hard as well,” she said.
Nancy also expressed her appreciation to both Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and GPS for helping her throughout the general election period, adding that she hoped to see GPS win big this GE15.
