KUCHING: The flood in Kampung Sungai Bedaun demonstrates the need for a coordinated water flow system and more organised drainage.
This was pointed out by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at a press conference after visiting the temporary evacuation centre (PPS) in Kampung Bedaun today (Dec 23).
“Some developments in this area were mentioned in the briefing that was given earlier. In order to prevent flooding in low-lying areas, I want a system that better integrates water flow and drainage.
“We also know that there are extended families of the Darul Hana dwellers from the Seberang Hilir area who will be accommodated in the Sungai Bedaun resettlement scheme.
“Therefore, it is important that such infrastructure is developed in this area.
“Currently, it has been implemented by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) and the Land Custody and Development Authority (LCDA),” he said.
Abang Johari added, “For the long term, it won’t cost a lot of money. If we solve it now, there won’t be any problems in the long term involving developing areas in Kuching.”
He asserted that there was a specific plan regarding the matter and he had been briefed on the plan.
“The current way of implementation … we plan to look from the perspective of the houses because we are developing a residential area,” he said.
He was also accompanied by Deputy Premier cum chairman of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Federal Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri.
