SIBU: A knife-wielding motorcyclist who was nabbed near Jalan Bukit Assek after allegedly terrorising the streets brandishing a knife while riding of late was yesterday produced in the Sessions Court here.
The charge preferred against Ling Pick Teck, 42, stated that he had in his possession offensive weapon, to wit, a knife, in a public place, other than with lawful authority or for a lawful purpose, at the roadside of Jalan Bukit Assek on Dec 27 at about 9pm.
Thereby, he has committed the offence of carrying an offensive weapon in a public place which is punishable under Section 6 (1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.
Under the Act, an offender could face an imprisonment term of not less than five years and not exceeding 10 years as well as liable to whipping upon conviction.
However when the nature of the charge was read and explained to Ling through an interpreter, he understood but entered his plea of not guilty to it.
Presiding Sessions Court Judge Marutin Pagan granted him to be released on RM3,000 bail in one surety and scheduled the pre-trial case management to Feb 2.
It was earlier reported that Ling was arrested following a 16-second video clip that went viral, showing the suspect riding a motorcycle and waving the knife at the people around Jalan Pulau here, causing public fear.
Sibu district police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili had then issued a statement that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) managed to trace the suspect and arrested him near Jalan Bukit Assek around 9 pm on Dec 27.
Seized from the suspect were a knife and a motorcycle believed to be used by him in the dramatic incident. He was also found to have previous criminal records.
Ling who secured his bail was not represented by legal counsel.
