KUCHING: Some 800 silat exponents from 16 countries are expected to take part in the inaugural Sarawak Premier International Silat Championships (SPISC).
According to SPISC organiser Rumpun Silat Sarawak (RSS), the championships would be held at Stadium Perpaduan from Feb 27 to March 5. “Prize money of USD20,000 and a championship belt will be awarded to the overall team champions.”
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg noted that “Sarawak is ready to host the tournament. In fact, preparations in terms of logistics are now being done.”
“The reception is overwhelming as countries such as Indonesia, Singapura, Brunei, Kyrgyzstan, India, Uzbekistan, United Kingdom will provide stiff competition,” he added on Monday (Jan 9).
Meanwhile, RSS deputy president Datuk Mohamad Yusnar Matalie said RSS was determined to continue organising silat championships in Sarawak.
“We hope this inaugural tournament will be successful. In fact, we do not wish to make this as a one-off tournament, but rather a series.
“I’m also excited and honoured to welcome international silat exponents to Bumi Kenyalang (Sarawak) next month.”
