KUCHING: The Sarawak contingent police headquarters (IPK) recorded its first largest drug seizure of ecstasy powder worth RM1.99 million, this year.
In an operation codenamed ‘Op Tapis Khas’, a 25-year-old local man was arrested following a raid on an apartment in Jalan Bulatan Park, Miri last Wednesday (Jan 18).
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri said the drugs drugs weighing 39.8kg, were the highest seizure in the state since 2021.
Last year, the General Operations Force (GOF) foiled a drug smuggling attempt in Serian, which involved RM1.29 million worth of syabu inside four backpacks.
“For the case in Miri, the suspect was busted around 5.45pm in the raid conducted by the Sarawak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID).
“Also seized were packaging equipment such as plastic barrels, basins, filters, funnels, scales, sealers and juice master packets.
“Background checks found that the suspect had two drug records under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and one criminal record under Section 4(1)(c) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953,” he told reporters this morning (Jan 20).
Azman said the drugs were obtained from the suspect’s accomplice and later packaged into juice master packets to be distributed to consumers around Miri, Bintulu, Sibu and Kuching.
The seized drugs could cater to some 132,667 users.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The suspect is currently remanded until Jan 23 under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
