PADAWAN: A Customs van transporting a detainee to the Kuching High Court on yesterday (Feb 2) was hit by a speeding four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle at the Mile 15 traffic light intersection, Jalan Kuching-Serian.

Padawan OCPD Supt Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad confirmed that the accident happened around 8.15am.

The impact of the collision caused the Customs van to land on its side while the 4WD’s front part was damaged.

The 33-year-old detainee sustained head injuries while the van driver and two officers aged between 35 and 38 only suffered bruises.

“Investigation found that the collision occurred when the 4WD vehicle was heading to Tapah town from Mile 7 and the 49-year-old driver claimed that he saw the traffic light turning green and changed lanes to the left before speeding off.

“When arriving at the traffic lights, the driver crashed into the Customs van moving from Puncak Borneo to Samarahan,” said Supt Abang Zainal Abidin.

Witnesses are urged to come forward to facilitate investigations into the case under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
