KUCHING: People who are prepared to work hard and who have enterprise will be able to succeed and do well in Sarawak.

In stating this Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the state government envisioned Sarawak being a land of opportunity.

“With the progress that we have made in 60 years of independence, we have established a firm foundation for peace and prosperity,” he said on yesterday (Feb 4).

Wee pointed out that Sarawak was admired by many for its racial harmony, thus it was important to continue fostering inter-racial interactions.

He said the more Sarawakians mix and integrate, the more they would know about one another and have friends of different races.

“In this way, we are less likely to misunderstand the actions of one another or to form any wrong image of our fellow citizens through stereotyping.

“Therefore, everyone has a part to play in preserving our unity and strengthening our cohesion.
“We all can facilitate such interactions in the workplace or in collaboration with other community or grassroots organisations,” he said.

Wee said there was much to be thankful for such as the peaceful and prosperous society where everyone was well looked after.

Among others, he said children get to go to good schools, Sarawakians receive good care in the hospitals and those who need financial assistance are helped by community organisations as well as other government agencies.

He said the older Sarawakians are also not forgotten whereby the state government is very mindful of their problems and was paying special attention to their needs to help them live a more meaningful and comfortable life.

“At the same time, people who are in need of assistance will find that they have not been neglected. The less fortunate among us are given assistance and aid by the government and community associations through our concept of many helping hands.

“If we all work together in the coming years to make Sarawak a land of opportunity, we will be able to ensure a better life for ourselves and our children,” he said.
