KUCHING: A social worker from the Batu Kawa Health Clinic referred a family with a malnourished baby to Hope Place recently.
A spokesperson for the NGO said the mother, Donnycia Kumin, 36, and her husband, Wema live at MJC Batu Kawa with their five children, aged between one and 14.
She added that Donnycia’s youngest child, a one-year-old baby girl was however found to be very under weight and lack of nutrition.
The family of seven depends on Wema’s income but his salary as a food delivery man barely makes ends meet, with his monthly income being below the minimum wage.
According to Wema, he used to be a radiographer at a hospital in Sandakan, but when his elderly father had health issues, he and his family moved back to Kuching to help out.
“I was earning a good salary last time, but after moving back to Kuching, I couldn’t find any job that suited my experience,” he added sadly.
But Wema’s food delivery job does give him flexibility with his time.
Every week day he brings four of his children to school and back and in between time to collect recycled items to sell.
Currently, Hope Place is supporting the family with basic food aid and children’s milk powder.
