Scrap metal dealers get eight months jail for theft

KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here yesterday (Feb 8) sentenced two scrap metal dealers to eight months in prison each for stealing and selling three transformers belonging to an electrical engineering company.

Sia, 35, and Lawrance, 26, pleaded guilty to two charges before Magistrate Zubaidah Sharkawi.

According to the first charge, they jointly stole three units of transformers belonging to an electrical engineering company causing a loss of RM5,000.

They committed the offence at the company’s storeroom at about 12 noon, on Feb 4.

They were charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code and Section 34 of the same code which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine or both, if convicted.

Zubaidah sentenced the two accused to six months in prison each.

As for the second charge, they were alleged to have disposed of stolen property by selling the tool to a recycling company in Jalan Kong Ping, around 2pm, on Feb 4.

For the offence, Zubaidah sentenced the two accused to eight months each in prison.

The court ordered the duo to serve their sentences from the date of their arrest on Feb 8.
