KUCHING: The Dara Kenyalang beauty pageant reality programme, which was shown for the first time on TVS yesterday (Feb 12) provides a platform to unearth hidden talents, especially for women.

The programme is an inspiration taken from the concept of ethnic beauty pageants, especially from the Iban, Orang Ulu and Bidayuh ethnic groups in Sarawak such as the Kumang, Keligit, and Rowing usually held during the Gawai Festival season.

“The 13-episode programme not only emphasises appearance, but also the abilities and uniqueness of one’s personality.

“With the opportunity to use this platform, hopefully new faces will enrich the entertainment industry, especially in Sarawak, and introduce the state to the world stage,” the programme organisers said in a statement.

Sharing what happened during the first episode, they said the programme opened  for audition sessions.

The list of audition participants from the first episode are Emmyissa Valerie, Desheila Amyra, Tonnia Kisi, Monica Syazliana, Clera Pungi, Amanda Stacy, Joecylyn Amil and Lofrenska Fezzie.

“The Dara Kenyalang reality programme was hosted by Willy Alfred with Sarawak-born singer Ramles Walter of the YouTube hit song ‘Aram Bergawai’ belting out the programme’s theme song ‘Dara Kenyalang’.

“In the introductory greeting session with judges Angela Martin, Wendy Earnest, Joanne Bulan Pakar and Priscilla Hyginus, the results of the first episode provided an opportunity for contestants from Kuching and Serian to advance to the next stage.

“Apart from the question-and-answer segment from all the judges, the participants will also present their talents which are divided into two sections, namely traditional and modern categories.

“Don’t forget to watch Dara Kenyalang every Sunday at 3pm and repeat broadcasts every Tuesday also at 3pm and every Friday at 8.45pm on TVS channel 122 Astro and MYTV,” the organisers said.
