KUCHING: The Sarawak government is targeting to export RM6 billion worth of value-added products such as furniture out of the total timber product export earnings by 2030.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said presently the export value for furniture still remains small.
“For the period of January to September last year, Sarawak exported a total of RM3.1 billion worth of timber and timber products to the world market.
“However, furniture registered only RM44 million which is only 1.5 percent of the total export value.
“Therefore, by 2030, the state government aims to increase the export of value-added products, which include furniture, to reach RM6 billion (US$D1.5 billion) or 75 percent of the total export earnings from timber and timber products of RM8 billion (USD$2 billion),” he said.
He was officiating at the launch of the inaugural Sarawak Design Week 2023 at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
Abang Johari said that to achieve the target, technology and human capital creativity need to be upgraded.
“Can you reach up to RM6 billion for the next seven years? That is a dream. That is your dream.
“But, if other countries can transform and leapfrog, I’m sure our young designers can do it as well,” he said.
