KUCHING: A total of 1,022 school athletes from 12 divisions – including the participation of special education students – joined the 45th Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSS Sarawak) Track and Field championship at the Sarawak Stadium in Petra Jaya on Wednesday.
The opening ceremony was graced by the Assistant Minister for Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, who representing Minister of Youth and Sports and Solidarity, Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong.
“The objective of the tournament is to unearth new potential athletes – as well as a platform to select athletes – to represent Sarawak for the Malaysia School Sport Council (MSSM),” said Rahman.
The selected athletes will be representing Sarawak to MSSM tournament which will be held at Stadium Bandaraya, in Pulau Pinang from April 24 until 29.
“During the previous MSSM championship, Sarawak team finished in the second place behind Selangor,” said Kuching District Education Officer, Kamariah Said who representing Director of Sarawak Education, Rakayah Haji Madon.
“Our athletes have broke five records, won 13 gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze medals in the last championship,” she added.
Organised by MSS Sarawak and hosted by Kuching District Education Office, the championship will end on April 1.
