MIRI: The Federal government has approved a wave breaker project to be built at Jalan Batu 1 fishing village at Kuala Baram near here.

This was revealed by Minister of Water, Land and Natural Resources, Dr A. Xavier Jayakumar during his visit to the fishing village about 20kms from here yesterday.

Dr Xavier was accompanied by Member of Parliament for Miri, Dr Michael Teo.

“The Federal government has approved the project estimated at RM25 million. We understand the problem faced by the villagers here as the sea is encroaching into the land,” he said.

About 200 families at the Kuala Batu village are involved in fishing.

Dr Xavier added that the project is expected to commence soon after the tender is out early next year.

“The project is scheduled for completion within one and half years,” he said, adding that with the completion of the wave breaker, it will prevent waves from encroaching into the land,” he explained.
