SIBU: As Sarawakians, we must understand our history before knowing our roots, said Joseph Chieng Jin Ek.

The Bukit Assek Assemblyman stressed that what we need more is to protect and defend the rights and interests of Sarawakians.

“This is referring especially the younger generation, our future leaders. They need to understand and master the history of Sarawak to ensure Sarawak will go well in the future. This is what people in Sarawak hope for,” he said.

He said this during the Sibu Life Society charity drive to raise funds by premiering a Hollywood film about Sir James Brooke, The first white Rajah of Sarawak at King’s Trioplex here on yesterday (March 9).

On the film, Chieng said that ‘Rajah’ is a historical film about Sarawak and was shot within the state itself.

“Through the film, the beautiful scenery, humanities, and culture of Sarawak can be brought to the world, that is, Hollywood,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sibu Chinese community leader, Temenggong Datuk Vincent Lau said that Sibu Life Society since its establishment 38 years ago, has cooperated with the government’s social welfare policies and combined social resources to make the most effective contribution.

He stressed that the association aimed to improve the well-being of residents and promote social welfare actions, and is determined to contribute to social responsibility.

“For this charity drive the money raised by the association through the “Charity Fundraising Performance” will be used for the association building expansion and to support its ambulance funding.

“At the same time, part of the money raised will also be used to support Destiny for Children, a children’s home currently rented by the association. Destiny for Children is a programme to help the stateless children,” he said.
