KUCHING: The State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba Sarawak) continues to be driven in its effort to build a resilient community among Sarawakians.
Bomba Sarawak director Datuk Khirudin Drahman said this is pertinent in ensuring the community can be independent and have the right skills as well as knowledge in managing any form of disasters.
With the establishment of Bomba community brigade and auxiliary firemen in the local communities throughout Sarawak, he pointed out that they complement and significantly assists the department’s roles.
“Through programmes like the Petra Jaya Bomba Community Carnival 2023, the department is able to train and impart knowledge members of the local community. There were over 120 participants who took part in this programme.
“Since 2015, a total of 875 Petra Jaya residents have signed up to be a part of our community brigade. This is an encouraging figure because these local champions can take the lead as leaders in the event of an emergency,” he said.
He said this in his welcoming speech at the Petra Jaya Bomba Community Carnival 2023 at Petra Jaya fire station here on Saturday (March 11).
Khirudin stated that the department always emphasises educating and raising awareness to the public.
He said this is in line with the first and second objectives of the National Fire and Rescue Policy 2020 to 2023 which is to create a safer environment and cultivate high safety practices in the community.
“The department will continue to deliver services to its best ability as we must uphold the trust that the people have towards us. This is in line with the fifth principle of Malaysia Madani which is trust.
“In fact, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof acknowledged the department’s efforts in ensuring the safety of all levels of society is guaranteed which is in line with the concept introduced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he added.
