KUCHING: Public parks under the jurisdiction of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will be given a yearly facelift.

Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the decision was taken to allow more recreational activities for the people, thereby creating a healthier community.

“When I became the mayor, I promised to touch up one park every year by giving the park a facelift,” he said.

The mayor said this to reporters after the Pending Recreational Park upgrading project completion handover ceremony, at the park here on Tuesday (Mar 14).

Wee added the upgrading and repairing of the parks will be done in phases and subject to the grants available.

“For the next one (park), we are awaiting the minister’s approval. Should there be any feedback, let us know, then we will try to make it better,” he added.

Wee also said all parks will be linked in the future so that people can either walk or cycle around.

The upgrading works of the Pending Recreational Park from August 22, 2022 to December 7, 2022 at a cost of around RM500,000 is funded by the National Landscape Department.

With the new facelift of the Pending Recreational Park, Wee also suggested that camping activities or a mooncake festival could be organised in the area.

“Therefore, we welcome suggestions from the community leader or anyone who is interested in organising events at the park here,” he said.

In preparation for the Sukan Malaysia (SUKMA) Games, he said, other facilities will also be put up at the MBKS Indoor Stadium, located within the vicinity of the Pending Recreational Park.

“We will be submitting the (proposed work) for the stadium, because we understand that the SUKMA Games will be held here (Sarawak) next year and Kuching must be ready for it.

“Additionally, this place is so big, hence we want to add more lighting, in order for it to be well lit for people to use it anytime,” he added.
