KUCHING: The Malaysian Ministry of Education (MoE) does not plan to reintroduce Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) examinations.
According to a news report by Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), MoE minister Fadhlina Sidek said that the ministry is focusing on empowering School-Based Assessment (PBS).
She said that the assessment involves few components namely Classroom Assessment (PBD), Physical Activity, Sports and Co-curricular Assessment (PAJSK) and Psychometric Assessment (PPsi).
“The assessment aims to assess students from the intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical and social aspects in line with the National Education Philosophy.
“PBS has been introduced since 2011 at the primary school level and in 2012 at the secondary school level and is an advanced tolerance process that focuses on the development of students holistically.
“It allows teachers to monitor the development, progress and mastery of each student in their learning process including the basic skills of reading, writing and counting,” she said.
Fadhlina said this when replying to a question from Serian MP Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem during an oral answer session at the Dewan Rakyat, on Thursday.
“Teachers can also plan and modify teaching and learning methods to help students improve their level of mastery, knowledge, skills and values as a solid foundation for learning at the next level,” she said.
She added that through PBS, student development in various aspects such as sports, co-curricular, moral values, interests and inclinations as well as character formation is strengthened.
“This is in line with the core of KPM which prioritises aspects of soft skills through the instilling of manners, morals and integrity to produce more intelligent children.
“MoE is confident that holistic and continuous assessment through PBS is the best approach to optimise students’ potential in a comprehensive and integrated manner.
“Therefore, MoE does not plan to re-introduce UPSR and PT3 where any decision to re-implement the examination is dependent on the results of the Malaysian Education Development Plan 2013-2025 report which will expire in 2025,” she said.
