KUCHING: The community here showed their support for parents and their autistic children by participating in an early morning walk and run.
The programme organised by three autism advocacy groups namely, Kuching Autistic Association (KAA) Resource and Education Centre, Pusat Integrasi Pintar (PIP) and Kuching Apple Talent Development and Welfare of Special Needs Club (KATSN) was held in conjunction with Kuching City North Commission (DBKU) Car Free Day programme today (Apr 2).
Several children dressed up as Marvel Comics and DC Comics superheroes, including Spiderman, Captain America and Wonder Woman in keeping with the event’s ‘Superhero’ theme.
The activities included a leisure walk and run that started as early as 9 am, cycling, and colouring activities.
Engaging in outdoor activities like these provides autistic children the opportunity to explore the world around them and develop a range of skills.
“The programme was organised to coincide with World Autism Awareness Day, which is celebrated worldwide on April 2,” said vice president of KAA Cynthia Jee. “Our goal is not only to increase public awareness about autism, but also to promote community involvement and support for individuals with autism and their families.”
Jee hopes that future events will encourage more parents of children with autism to participate, and expressed gratitude towards those who attended the event and supported the cause. In addition, the event concluded with Sarawak McDonald’s team distributing free Happy Meals to the children who participated.
