KUCHING: The federal government is currently exploring the possibility of handing over the administration of education and healthcare matters to the Sabah and Sarawak governments.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that further discussions were needed between the relevant federal and state ministries to determine the scope of work to be carried out by the respective state governments.

“This is among the things that need to be studied in detail,” he said after a gathering session with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Petra Jaya youth at a local eatery in Jalan Matang, here.

When asked about the present progress concerning the return of autonomy over education and healthcare matters to Sarawak, Fadillah, who is also Petra Jaya MP, said, “Yes, that (the return of autonomy of education and health to Sarawak) is already in principle agreed (by the federal government). So, we are now working on the details.”

The Sarawak government has been pushing for the return of autonomy in healthcare and education sectors, in line with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Earlier this year, he stated that the federal government had agreed in principle to return the autonomy to Sarawak.
