If you’re looking for a change in scenery, Malaysia has plenty of sights and sounds for you to discover. Here is our top pick of lesser-known destinations worth visiting the next time you’re in town

Gunung Datuk, Rembau, Negeri Sembilan
For those of you who are into outdoor activities, we highly recommend you to go to this underrated nature preserve in Malaysia. The tallest peak of Negeri Sembilan offers more than just breathtaking views, but also interesting folklores behind it.

However, be warned that the track is rather strenuous, so make sure to stretch out, wear proper hiking shoes and bring plenty of H20. Just like any other jungle track, you can spot various flora and faunas along the way. Do mind your steps as there are massive trees and large rocks aplenty as you ascend to the top of the hill. Legend has it that Hang Tuah once conquered this peak, in which his footprint is immortalised on one of the highest boulders on Gunung Datuk. So, be on the lookout for that!

Sararan, Kuala Selangor, Selangor
Head on down to Sasaran, which is an hour’s drive from Kuala Lumpur when you feel like taking a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. This quaint small town holds interesting places for you to venture into and trust us when we say it’s going to be worth it.

To get a taste of the simple life, you can arrange a trip to Sasaran Fishing Village where you can catch nature at its untouched glory. Mangrove trees thrive in this area and naturally, you can (if you’re lucky enough) see silver-tailed monkeys swinging among the branches. Anglers also often come by on weekends as this is a popular location for day fishing.

Pulau Jerejak, Penang
This islet, which once went by the moniker of Malaysia’s very own Alcatraz, bears more than just chilling histories and remnants of war times throughout the decades. In fact, Pulau Jerejak has been revamped into a rather swanky place to kick it with your buddies.

Whip out your smartphones and get ready to strike a pose at the rainbow-coloured pier and walls nearby the beach. There is also a towering instalment nearby, resembling a staircase facing upwards to the sky which definitely will be a hit amongst your Instagram audience.

If vanity isn’t your thing, you can also get involved in outdoor activities in this islet such as bike riding, guided jungle trekking, and even kayaking!

Janda Baik, Pahang
Nestled between the scenic highlands of Titiwangsa mountain range, this secluded sanctuary in Pahang is the place for you to be one with Mother Nature. This quiet sanctuary is packed with adventures and activities all in one place.

Time to put the pedal to the metal as you go on an ATV ride with different courses for you to choose from, all with ranging difficulties and terrains. Not a big fan of the wheels? Well, you can still explore the vistas of the enchanted forest by going on horseback riding.

Among other activities that you can try here are agricultural tours, fishing, waterfall hike and many more. There are also designated picnic and camping areas for you to just chill and immerse yourself completely in the ever-calming ambience of the rainforest.
