SIMUNJAN: Councillors play an important role in ensuring that Sarawak government policies can be implemented at the grassroots level, says Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil.
The Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government added that appointing members of the council brought great honour and responsibility to themselves and the people.
“In Malaysia, we have three government administration criteria, namely the central government, state government and local authorities.
“Council members play a very important role in implementing whatever policies, projects and programmes that have been entrusted to councils throughout Sarawak.”
Penguang said this during the appointment and swearing-in ceremony of Simunjan District councillors at Dewan Mesra Simunjan on today (April 6).
The Marudi assemblyman added that council members were also representatives of the assemblyman at the grassroots level for each area and a link to connect the government and the people.
“What this means is that whatever issues from the grassroots level, you must bring them to the representatives of the people and also the state government.
“Similarly, whatever policy that has been enacted by the state government, you are responsible for conveying it to the people at the grassroots level. Do not take your duty as a councillor lightly.”
Penguang also called on the Simunjan District Council to make broader initiatives by thinking outside the box as there were still many things that needed to be improved.
At the ceremony, Seroji Ludin, who is also the Simunjan District Officer, was sworn in as the new chairman of the council, followed by 31 member, including 16 new faces.
