KUCHING: Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) welcomes the announcement by the Ministry of Education (MOE) concerning the special holiday for schools on April 19.
Its president Zulkiflee Sebli said that the announcement was timely considering that many teachers in the rural areas are planning their trip back to their hometown.
“With the announcement, the teachers will surely be excited to return to their hometown to celebrate Hari Raya,” he said in a statement yesterday.
Zulkiflee also said that KGBS believed that there are many teachers who are far from their families, so they need to travel long distances to reach their hometown.
In fact, he said, many of the teachers required two to three days to arrive at their hometown, resulting in relatively high expenses.
“Therefore, the special holiday will ease the burden of the teachers, especially those from West Malaysia working in Borneo and vice versa,” he said.
Zulkiflee also hoped that MOE could in the future decide early on the date of holiday for the festive season, especially Hari Raya.
“We know that after the Hari Raya Aidilfitri holiday, schools will reopen on May 2 and then the Wesak holiday on May 4, while on May 5 they will return to school and continue their holidays on the weekends.
“So, in the first week of May there will be two public holidays and three days of school. In my opinion, it will be great if the school period is in the second week of May to let the teachers spend more time with their families.
“KGBS hopes that in the future the aspect of the holiday will be taken into consideration as it gives impact to the teachers and students celebrating Hari Raya,” he said.
