SERIAN: The concept of ‘majmuk’ or multi-ethnicity, is more prevalent in the state compared to other parts of the country, said Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem.
The local representative noted that as a Member of Parliament (MP) for over 30 years, he has witnessed the different ways in which this pluralism manifests itself in various parts of Sarawak.
He cited the example of the formation of the Unit for Other Religions (UNIFOR) which he believes has the potential to bring about positive change and foster greater unity among the various ethnic groups.
In light of this, Riot commended the events held by Lembaga Amanah Kebajikan Islam Serian (LAKIS), which involved not only the Muslims but also non-Muslims.
“Thank you for continuously inviting me to participate in the activities organised by LAKIS. Let’s work together to maintain the diversity and strengthen our bond,” he said when speaking at the board’s annual programme, ‘Berambeh Sungkei Serian,’ at the Serian Community Hall last night (Apr 13).
On the same note, Riot praised LAKIS for its active involvement in Serian, saying the organisation is always there to support the community in times of need.
‘Berambeh Sungkei Serian’ is an annual event organised by the board to bring together the Serian community to strengthen social ties and promote goodwill among local folks.
During the event, a symbolic gesture was made to mark the 11th year of the programme’s inception, with Riot signing a plaque as a representation of the occasion.
Also present were Serian district officer Lim Hock Meng, and chairman of LAKIS Ustaz Mohammad Amin Dan.
Meanwhile, Riot said he has distributed a total of RM203,200 in incentives to 50 recipients in the constituency recently.
The beneficiaries were students of public and private universities as well as local non-governmental organisations (NGOs), Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs), and clubs.
Out of the total amount, RM8,200 was distributed among 22 students from higher learning institutions, while RM195,000 was given to 28 recipients from NGOs, JKKK, and clubs.
