KUALA LUMPUR: National para badminton ace Cheah Liek Hou was in a class of his own en route to retaining his title in the 2023 Brazil International Para Badminton Championships on Sunday.

The 35-year-old took home the gold medal in the men’s singles SU5 (physical disability) category after edging compatriot Muhammad Fareez Anuar 21-19, 21-19 in the final in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Liek Hou, who also won the Tokyo Paralympic gold, then paired up with Muhammad Fareez to down top seeds Chirag Baretha-Raj Kumar of India 21-13, 21-18 in the men’s doubles final.

This is the third straight time that Liek Hou-Muhammad Fareez have beaten the India pair, having defeated them in the finals of the Bahrain International Championships last May and the Spain International Championships in February.

“Done my job well and managed to defend my title (which I won) here last year. Will be getting tougher and tougher every tournament because it (is) already the beginning of the qualifying for Paris Paralympics 2024,” he posted on Facebook yesterday. – BERNAMA
