KUCHING: Kuching South City Council (MBKS) will hold its first environmental exhibition from April 29 to May 12 here at MBKS.

The exhibition titled “Make Climate Cool Again: Let’s Talk about the Environment” is a joint effort with NakedWonders and the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) in conjunction with Earth Day which fell on April 22.

MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng stressed the importance of taking actions to preserve resources and promote environmental sustainability in the community.

“The aim is to protect the environment for the current and future generations to ensure they can continue to enjoy the resources that have been built up over time.

“This exhibition will be a one-stop space for the public to learn more about environmental issues and raise awareness about climate change.

“In addition, we would also like to showcase local heroes who are making a difference and encourage sustainable development,” he said during a press conference at MBKS here yesterday.

He added that the exhibition will partner with the education department to organise educational tours for students in Kuching.

Wee also highlighted that three million straws were prevented from entering the environment since the ban of plastic straw in April this year at MBKS.

“The ban of plastic straw was the first step in achieving the sustainable development goals and Post-COVID Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.

In the meantime, he urged the public to cooperate with the city council to take the first step towards environment preservation and to ensure the continuity of the movement in the future.

Meanwhile, the exhibition will also feature Malaysia’s largest turtle sculpture made from plastic straws created by Daphne Siaw from Artsy Daphy.

The record-breaking achievement was recognised by the Malaysian Book of Records and intended to encourage action towards ending the use of plastic straws in Kuching.

Several activities are set to take place on coming weekends (April 29 and 30) including a weekend ECO market, ‘Plastic not so Fantastic’ workshop, Yoga workshop, Yourgutbb: Sustainable Wonders in a Bottle workshop and registration of ibuyback app.
