KUCHING: Nick Jansen, also known as ‘globalgibbon’, has gained immense popularity on social media platforms with his new Gawai song ‘Anang Malu’.

Nick records the song in the studio.

With 181,000 followers on Tiktok and 40,100 subscribers on YouTube, Nick released the song on April 28, and it has garnered 94,000 views on YouTube in just one week.

When contacted by New Sarawak Tribune, Nick said he wanted to focus on a Sarawak song that would work well here, and that’s how ‘Anang Malu’ was born.

“I listen to a lot of Iban songs, and all these people (around) inspired me, so I wrote down a couple of verses, a little bit of my life. And I sat down with my friend, and came up with this,” he said.

The ‘Anang Malu’ music video is nearly four minutes long, with some Iban words used in the song.

Nick, who hails from the Netherlands, has been residing in Kuching for 11 years and plans on producing more songs in different languages for each festival in the future.

“I’m maybe playing with the idea to do one for every festival so maybe one for Chinese New Year and then one fully in Iban and maybe another, a Malay Sarawak language-focused,” he said.

Apart from his new Gawai song, Nick creates content on Tiktok, where he is known for pronouncing English words with an Iban accent.

Nick and his crew plans the scenes for the music video.
