SEBUYAU: Utility and Telecommunication minister Datuk Julaihi Narawi is tight-lipped on the progress of Sarawak’s own telecommunication (telco) company.

When he was enquired by the media about the matter yesterday at Dewan Pembangunan Sebuyau, he responded, “wait and see.”

Following this, he pointed out that at the moment, Sarawak has its own telecommunication agency, Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC).

“SDEC focuses on providing telco services in the rural areas. So when you (media) ask whether there is any (Sarawak owned telco company), just wait and see lah,” he said when met at the Aidilfitri Open House here.

Commenting on whether the matter will be raised during the upcoming State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting this month, the Sebuyau assemblyman said that at present, Sarawak has SDEC to undertake all the implementation of telecommunication in the rural areas.

“At the moment, SDEC is currently doing the same kind of work done by any other telco companies in Malaysia,” he added.

On April 30 this year, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said that Sarawak is developing its own telco company.

“We are currently implementing this, and by 2025, all these will be completed and Sarawak will become a leading state in the internet field,” he had said.
