KUCHING: Fourteen people from two families were made homeless after a midnight blaze laid waste to two houses in Kampung Temenggong, Jalan Telaga Air, today (May 7).
No injuries or casualties were reported in the 12.35am incident, as they managed to get out to safety.
A spokesman for the Fire and Rescue Department said the first house was occupied by a family of 11, and the second house was inhabited by a family of three.
Firemen from Petra Jaya and Padungan stations were promptly deployed to the scene, about 23 kilometres from the stations.
Upon arrival, the semi-detached houses were beyond saving, and the extinguishing deed was performed.
The teams faced a minor setback during extinguishing works as there were no fire hydrants near the scene.
They had to use water sourced from the fire engine’s pump and water tankers, and the flames were brought under control around 1am.
Once the situation was deemed safe, the teams wrapped up the operation around 3.15am.
The cause of the fire and the losses incurred are still under investigation.
