NEW DELHI: At least 21 people, including women and children, were killed in a tourist boat accident in the southern Indian state of Kerala on Sunday evening.
The houseboat was carrying about 40 passengers on a recreational trip when it capsized off the coastal town of Tanur in the Malappuram district.
Most victims were from that area, according to local media reports, which put the number of dead at 21.
The death toll was expected to rise as many were missing.
Fifteen of the dead were identified, said V. Abdurahiman, the state’s sports minister, who was coordinating the rescue efforts along with tourism minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas.
“The boat had overturned. The reason for it is not yet known. The police will investigate it,” Abdurahiman was quoted as saying in a report. The Kerala government announced that Monday will be observed as a day of mourning in the
