KUCHING: The newly-launched Chitose Carbon Capture Central Sarawak (C4 Sarawak) is indeed groundbreaking and pioneering the future need for sustainable and renewable energy.
arawak Federation of Chinese Associations (SFCA) president Datuk Richard Wee said the first industrial microalgae production facility in Sarawak was crucial in leading the state into a high income economy, with more job opportunities.
“If we are able to follow through the roadmap that has been announced by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, we would be able to commercialise the technology and monetise the patents and the products in the future,” he told New Sarawak Tribune.
He said the initiative taken by the Sarawak government in focusing on high tech and new innovation augured well for Sarawak and it allowed the state to embark onto a new frontier.
“We hope that our Premier’s vision and goal will position Sarawak in its endeavour into the future renewable energy sector in the new world.
“At the same time, all these will provide an additional revenue stream in the future for Sarawak.”
According to Abang Johari, the sales from the components of this biomass, namely lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, could potentially generate an economic value of RM2bil to RM3bil per year.
“As a start, the 5ha site will serve as a good example of managing carbon in a circular economy, while the state continues to gather data to enhance the technology and scale it up to 100ha and expand it to 2,000ha in the future if it is commercially viable,” he said at the launch on yesterday (May 10).
He also said the facility would create more than 5,000 new job opportunities and about 200,000 tonnes of carbon could be decarbonised annually.
