KAPIT: The federal government has issued a stern reminder to individuals, leaders, and political parties against exploiting racial and religious issues that could undermine racial harmony in the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that appropriate action will be taken under the Sedition Act against anyone attempting to spread hatred based on religion, race, or culture.

“To prevent such occurrences, it is crucial to foster a better understanding of our differences. Political parties should refrain from using religion as a tool and claiming that a particular faith is under threat,” said Ahmad Zahid.

According to him, it is important to note that the Unity Government embraces and respects all differences.

“While Islam is the official religion, other religions are freely practiced in our country, and this principle must be upheld and put into practice.”

Ahmad Zahid said this during the ‘Leaders with the Community’ programme at Rumah Richard Engking yesterday (June 3).

He added that fostering understanding and respect among different races can be achieved through festivals such as the Gawai Dayak celebration in Sarawak and Kaamatan in Sabah.

Anwar and his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail are expected to grace the state-level Gawai dinner in Kuching on June 7.
