Agong’s birthday celebration starts with Thanksgiving

MIRI: The official celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday at the state level began with a thanksgiving ceremony held at the At-Taqwa Mosque here yesterday (June 4).

Approximately 1,000 attendees were present at the event, including the Head of State Tun Pehin Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Raghad Kurdi Taib, as well as Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his wife, Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang.

The ceremony started at 7 pm with the recitation of the ‘Surah Yasin’, led by state imam Sahibul Fadillah Datuk Mustapha Kamal Ahmad Fauzi. This was followed by a ‘Tazkirah’ (talk) delivered by State Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) director Khalidi Ibrahim and the reading of the ‘Zikir Marhaban’.

The event proceeded with the ‘Maghrib’ and ‘Isyak’ prayers, concluding with a thanksgiving prayer led by Mustapha.

Among the dignitaries present were Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar and his wife, Datuk Fatimah Mohd Iskandar; Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki and his wife, Datin Amar Baduyah Bujang, Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni and Sarawak Islamic Council (SIC) president Misnu Taha and his wife, Datin Jamilah Said.

Furthermore, a high-tea reception is scheduled to take place today (June 5) at the Pullman Hotel, where the Premier is expected to deliver his speech.

This year, Miri has been chosen as the host city for the state-level celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s official birthday.
