KUCHING: The decision of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to attend the Umno general assembly underscores the strong ties between the two parties.
Political analysts Dr Ammar Redza Ahmad Rizal said that both Umno and GPS share similarities in their party structure and organisation, making this a strategic move to strengthen their long-term relationship.
As such, the presence of Abang Johari, who is Sarawak Premier, at the general assembly is noteworthy.
Dr Ammar felt that this time, Umno really needs GPS or Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) around.
“By having the Premier attend the assembly, it shows that the ties between them is strong.
“It is known that perhaps Umno is the bridge between GPS and Pakatan Harapan, allowing the party to join the Unity Government coalition,” he said to New Sarawak Tribune.
On Friday (June 3), Abang Johari confirmed his attendance at the upcoming Umno general assembly scheduled for June 9.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is Deputy Prime Minister said this was confirmed when he visited the residence of Abang Johari earlier in the morning.
Elaborating, Dr Ammar pointed out that the general assembly provides a platform for the party to show their planning, especially in facing challenges posed by the Perikatan Nasional, which is said to be gaining increasing support, especially among Malay voters.
“Umno has to show that they are able to uphold Malay interests in the Unity Government.
“If not, their relevancy in the Unity Government will be at stake,” he added.
