SIBU: The Public Works Department (PWD) has been urged to address safety concerns along the Pan Borneo Highway, especially the stretch between Sibu and Selangau.
Tamin assemblyman Christopher Gira Sambang called for the installation of additional road signs and warning boards to provide clear instructions to the public regarding the number of lanes available at specific sections.
Following a recent accident that claimed the lives of eight individuals on the Pan Borneo Highway, Gira took to his social media platform Tuesday (June 6) to highlight the urgent need for precautions on this crucial road segment.
“Motorists also need to exercise caution and take necessary precautions while travelling on this stretch of road.
“The growing number of vehicles, particularly during festive seasons, calls for increased vigilance,” he said.
“With multiple sections of the Pan Borneo Highway now open, there is a discrepancy in the number of lanes available, ranging from four lanes in some areas to only two in others. This variation, coupled with the prevailing issue of speeding among drivers, creates a hazardous situation for motorists,” he said.
Additionally, the existence of shortcuts along the Pan Borneo Highway has led to reckless driving practices and a surge in accidents.
Gira appealed to all motorists to assume responsibility by driving responsibly, adhering to traffic regulations, and paying close attention to directional sign boards.
