SIBU: Alverth Hudson Awan Kebing, an exceptional candidate from SMK Rosli Dhoby, has showcased remarkable achievements in the recently announced 2022 Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) results, defying the obstacles he faced.

Despite living with cerebral palsy (CP) since birth, 18-year-old Alverth’s hard work paid off with an impressive score of 6A and 2C in the exams, the results which were officially released on Thursday (June 8).

As the youngest among three siblings, he expressed his elation at surpassing his own expectations.
“I never anticipated achieving this; I initially aimed for around 4As, but I have exceeded my own projections,” he said when met by the media after receiving his result.

Acknowledging the invaluable support from his teachers, Alverth highlighted their dedication in providing additional guidance.

“The teachers here have been incredibly helpful. They emphasised memorisation techniques, especially for subjects like history. They conducted numerous extra classes, and I made sure to attend every single one of them, determined not to miss out.”

Alverth also expressed his gratitude to the teachers for offering free supplementary classes throughout the week, from Monday to Saturday.

He credited his unexpected success in Mathematics, where he anticipated a grade of D but achieved a C, while his favourite subject, English, earned him an outstanding grade of A.

Considering the available opportunities, Alverth, who dreams of a career as a customs officer, stated that he would carefully assess each education offer he receives using his results.

He also expressed gratitude towards his caring classmates, who displayed genuine concern for his wellbeing.

Angela Mendong, Alverth’s mother and chief nurse at the Oya Health Clinic, expressed her unwavering support and happiness regardless of her son’s results.

“To be able to keep up with his classmates, considering his special circumstances, is already commendable. As long as he can lead a fulfilling life and take care of himself to the best of his abilities, I am grateful.”

Angela stressed the importance of not placing excessive pressure on Alverth and instead encouraged him to do his best.

Proudly acknowledging her son’s exceptional achievement of 6As, she noted the teachers’ unwavering commitment both at school and by monitoring their academic progress at home, which undoubtedly played a significant role in Alverth’s success.
