KUCHING: The Kedup assemblyman has called for collective efforts in safeguarding and reviving Bidayuh cultural pride for generations to come.

In light of this, Martin Ben commended the efforts of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) Cultural Bureau for their ongoing initiatives in promoting and preserving Bidayuh traditions.

He expressed hope that DBNA branches and units from various regions would actively contribute to the collection of Bidayuh cultural artefacts and traditions.

In response to a recent New Sarawak Tribune article titled “Revival of Bidayuh Cultural Pride”, he stressed that it is important to preserve and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Bidayuh community.

“Our cultural heritage, be it traditional costumes, dances, music, food, or arts and crafts, must be preserved and continuously showcased.

“I believe our DBNA Cultural Bureau is doing it. I hope DBNA branches and units from different regions can help contribute to the collection,” he told our reporter.

The article, written by managing editor of the New Sarawak Tribune Aden Nagrace, emphasised the significance of resurrecting Bidayuh traditional pride.

Martin asserted that the write-up is a timely reminder to all Bidayuhs, particularly the younger generations, to value and showcase their cultural traditions.

As such, he urged Bidayuhs from all regions, including Lundu, Bau, Padawan, and Serian, to instill cultural pride among the younger generations.

He acknowledged that each tribe within the Bidayuh community, residing across different river systems, hills, and mountains, possesses its own unique designs, motifs, and meanings with regard to costumes as well as arts and crafts.

Towards this end, Martin, who is also the Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development II (Commodity and Regional Development), stressed the importance of preserving these invaluable items for future generations to cherish.

As the Bidayuh community embarks on a collective journey to preserve and showcase their cultural heritage, their efforts are likely to inspire neighbouring communities and the wider public to appreciate and celebrate the diverse traditions that make Sarawak a unique cultural tapestry.
