KUCHING: A total of seven percent of buildings in Sarawak have yet to receive fire certification (FC) from the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM).
According to JBPM’s director-general Datuk Mohammad Hamdan Wahid, this included state-owned buildings, businesses, factories, shopping malls, hotels, industries, gatherings, storage and condominiums.
“In Sarawak, a total of 540 buildings require FC and so far, seven percent have yet to get approval and are in the process of getting approval,” he said during a press conference after officiating the State Assistant Director of Fire Safety Division Bil.3/2018 meeting at a leading hotel here yesterday.
“The FC covers seven zones, namely Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang.
“The designated building is a building that faces a high risk of fire and this level of risk should be approved by providing a fixed installation,” he said.
Meanwhile, he said that for the whole of Malaysia, a total of 8,600 buildings were set to have FC but only 50 percent had been passed while others were still in the process of approval.
“We will give a certain period of time for them to comply with all the instructions, if they do not follow, then we will take legal actions as well as apply to the lawyer to bring the case to court,” he said.
