KUCHING: The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), through its subsidiary SEDC Energy, is actively involved in the production of green hydrogen as part of its efforts towards a green economy through two main projects, namely H2ornbill and H2biscus.

Its chairman Tan Sri Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain said that these hydrogen economy initiatives are in line with the aspirations of the state government to achieve carbon neutrality and recognise carbon credits as tradable commodities as Sarawak explores hydrogen and other green technologies.

“The large-scale production of green hydrogen in Sarawak, under the codename Project H2ornbill, has been initiated through our subsidiary, SEDC Energy, in collaboration with Japanese companies Sumitomo Corp and ENEOS.

“And another initiative by SEDC Energy is the collaboration with three major Korean industrial companies, Samsung Engineering, POSCO, and Lotte Chemical, for the feasibility study of the H2biscus Project with the objective of developing a Green Hydrogen Derivative Facility in the Bintulu Petchem Industrial Park,” he was quoted as saying in the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) report.

He made these remarks at the 5th International Energy Week (IEW) 2023 held at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), today (June 14).

Abdul Aziz added that SEDC Energy was also involved in the development of infrastructure for Electric Vehicle (EV) and Hydrogen-based EV (FCEV) refueling stations.

“The construction of the first multi-fuel PETROS service station in Darul Hana has been completed and officially operational since April 1, 2022.

“SEDC Energy has also launched an integrated PETROS service station in March with a Dealer-Owned, Dealer-Operated (DODO) business model, the first of its kind in Daro, and this is our initial effort in rural areas,” he added.

Meanwhile, executive vice president of Samsung Engineering, Park Cheon-Hong, stated that they wanted to promote the H2biscus project and other initiatives to make Sarawak the world’s first hydrogen hub.

“We are committed to implementing projects in Sarawak and promoting them together with Sarawak as the world’s first hydrogen hub,” he said.
