The boat (left) that the victim was travelling in before falling into Sungai Sapan, Jemoreng, Matu.DARO: An elderly woman who fell into Sungai Sapan, Kampung Jemoreng, Matu, was found drowned last Saturday afternoon.

Daro District Police chief, ASP Neil Baginda said the body of Awanah Mohamad, 75, was found at 1.45pm about 5 metres from where she was last seen.

He said the body was sent to Daro Hospital for examination before being sent to Kampung Jemoreng for burial.

Neil said the case was classified as sudden death.

Meanwhile, a witness known as Muhamad Zakaria, in his 40s, said a search and rescue (SAR) team, comprising the police and Civil Defence Force (APM) personnel, was deployed to the location to help him and his friends to look for the victim after receiving an emergency call at 9.00am.

He said prior to the incident, he and his friends were on their way to their favourite fishing spot in Ulu Sungai Sapan when they heard a woman screaming for help.

Muhamad Zakaria said when they came to the woman’s aid, they only found her boat.
