KUCHING: The CEO of Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC), Zolkipli Muhamad Aton, announced that substantial funds have been obtained for large-scale tree planting operations, which will take place in Similajau National Park (SNP).
This site has been chosen due to its ecological significance and the pressing need to counter degradation. With the support of the local community, non-governmental organizations, and corporate bodies, the aim is to plant 10,000 native tree species in SNP as part of the initiative.
During the launch of the Rewilding of Sarawak’s Urban Totally Protected Areas (TPAs) through habitat restoration on Thursday (June 22), collaboration between OM Holdings Limited and SFC at Similajau National Park, Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Majang Renggi, who is also the Samalaju assemblyman, completed the symbolic launch.
Zolkipli stated that, in collaboration with OM Holdings Limited, the planted trees will help restore important wildlife habitats and contribute to climate change mitigation through carbon sequestration.
A total of750 saplings of various species, including durian, dabai, terap, engkalak, tamarind, cempedak, jackfruit, kepayang, keranji, guava, kasai, and rambutan, have already been planted with initial funding from OM Holdings Limited. These species were selected for their ecological importance.
Furthermore, an additional donation of RM122,000 from OM Holdings Limited will enable the planting of 2,528 more saplings, further expanding rehabilitation efforts.
Zolkipli stressed the importance of preserving and protecting SNP and other Totally Protected Areas (TPAs) as they face challenges such as habitat degradation, encroachment, and unsustainable practices.
He expressed the hope that more organizations would provide funds for SFC’s ongoing research on biodiversity conservation. With additional financial support, he believed that SFC could enhance its conservation efforts and implement a more comprehensive strategy to protect the park’s ecosystem.
To raise awareness about the significance of SNP, SFC plans to install signage throughout the park, provide educational information, and organize workshops and outreach programs to foster a sense of pride and connection within the community.
