SANTUBONG: ‘Gotong-royong’ cleaning programmes in villages should be encouraged because they are beneficial to the villagers.
Pantai Damai State Assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi suggested such programme be organised for Kampung Salak so that the residents could learn to adopt healthy lifestyle and hygiene in their home, as well as maintaining the cleanliness of the village and surrounding environment.
“At the same time, the villagers will be advised not to throw rubbish anywhere in the village or into the river,” he said when launching the Community Environmental Education Pilot Study (CEEPS) in Kampung Salak, yesterday.
According to Dr Abdul Rahman, the study conducted by the Natural Resources and Environment (NREB) and Sarawak Sabah Environment Protection Department aims to provide the best method for improving the socio-economic status of the community with the sustainable management of the natural environment.
In addition, the community programme was conducted in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas), Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) and the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB).
Dr Abdul Rahman, who is also Assistant Minister for Public Utilities (Electricity and Telecommunications), said the programme would benefit the villagers because it would improve their wellbeing.
“This is in line with the development progress of the village which now enjoys amenities like electricity, clean water supply and also broadband services,” he explained.
