SIBU: During a site visit on Tuesday (June 27), Sarawak Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Ir Aidel Lariwoo provided an update on an ongoing road construction project aimed at improving connectivity and transportation infrastructure here.
The project focuses on constructing roads along Sungai Bidut, Kampung Tutus, Kampung Sebedil and Kampung Bungan Kecil, and is divided into two packages.
“The first package, covering a 22km stretch from Sungai Bidut to Kampung Sebedil, is progressing steadily with an estimated cost of RM104mil. Its completion is expected in January 2024.
“The project follows the specifications outlined by the Public Works Department (JKR) to ensure high-quality standards. It aims to enhance accessibility for residents in the area and create a comprehensive road network that connects Sungai Bidut, Bungan Kecil and Igan, shortening the distance to Sibu.
“The second phase, covering a total distance of 38km and including Kampung Tutus, Kampung Sebedil and Kampung Bungan Kecil, is part of this initiative.”
Settlements along the riverbanks and across the river might be considered for future access development, he added, recognising their importance as vital waypoints along the primary route.
The exact construction cost for the second phase is yet to be determined pending the completion of the tender process.
The allocation of funds for the second phase will depend on the approval of the ongoing half-term study.
“The Sarawak government prioritises road projects based on significance and urgency to ensure efficient allocation of resources. Most of the design work for these roads has been completed, and land compensation has been settled.
“The awaited funding will be presented during the forthcoming budget session in the Sarawak Assembly,” Aidel explained.
“The project’s progress currently stands at 71 per cent, with a minor delay of two per cent attributed to nearby plantation operations,” he added.
