BINTULU: A pickup truck driver who recklessly overtook another vehicle along Jalan Tatau-Bintulu last Saturday, has voluntarily surrendered to the police.
The incident, which occurred at Selitut Bridge, came to light after a 13-second video clip from another driver’s dashboard camera (dashcam) recording went viral on the Facebook page of Sarawak Roads Update.
The dashcam footage showed a heart-stopping moment when a white Toyota Hilux attempted an overtaking manoeuvre that jeopardised the safety of other vehicles and nearly caused a fatal accident.
Because of that, the video had attracted widespread attention and a wave of negative comments condemning the driver’s action.
According to the Sarawak Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, the pickup truck driver surrendered himself to the nearest police station on yesterday (July 4) to facilitate investigation.
The department said the driver had committed an offence under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving which can endanger the lives of road users.
He faces a fine of up to RM15,000 or up to five years jail and suspension of his driver’s licence for a period of up to five years, if convicted.
The department reminds road users to always obey the road rules and regulations, in order to avoid accidents.
