SIBU: The highly anticipated Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF), scheduled to take place from July 14 to 23 at Dataran Tun Tuanku Haji Bujang, is set to be bigger and better than ever before.
Organised by the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), the 10-day festival aims to showcase the vibrant traditions, arts, and cuisines of the diverse communities, while celebrating unity in diversity.
Organising committee chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Roseley expressed excitement about the upcoming event. “BCF has become a much-anticipated highlight on the annual calendar, attracting visitors from both near and far. The festival offers attendees the opportunity to immerse themselves in a whirlwind of cultural experiences.”
The BCF would feature a variety of highlights, including captivating cultural performances, an art and craft exhibition, a traditional food fair, as well as workshops and demonstrations, the deputy SMC chairman said here today (July 7).
Talented artists representing various ethnic groups from Chinese, Dayak, and Malay-Melanau pavilions will showcase their captivating cultural performances.
In addition, international performers from Thailand, Indonesia, and China will grace the stage during the international night on July 22.
Attendees can expect to be mesmerised by traditional dances, music, and storytelling that showcase the rich heritage of Sibu and Borneo.
The Arts & Culture Exhibition (ACE) will offer visitors a glimpse into intricate craftsmanship and artistic talents, featuring wood carvings, weaving, and beading. The Sarawak Craft Council will be one of the main exhibitors at ACE.
The festival will also be a gastronomic delight, with a mouthwatering array of traditional delicacies available at the three pavilions representing Iban, Malay, and Chinese cuisines.
Interactive workshops and demonstrations will be conducted by Pustaka Negeri Sarawak, allowing visitors to learn traditional arts, crafts, and cultural practices firsthand.
Attendees will have the opportunity to try their hand at traditional instrument playing, learn the art of weaving, or participate in a cooking class featuring local recipes.
The popular Melanau Itut/Tibau swing will be available for everyone to experience, and an International Blowpipe Competition event is also scheduled.
“The success of the BCF is made possible through the collaborative efforts of various organisations, government bodies, and community partners.
“We would like to express our gratitude to the Sarawak Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, as well as all sponsors and supporters who have contributed to making this event a reality,” Izkandar said.
The opening ceremony on July 14 at 8pm will be officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government.
The closing ceremony on July 23 at 7.15pm will be graced by Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The BCF will conclude with a spectacular 10-minute fireworks display at 10.30pm.
