SIBU: An exhibition titled ‘Tuan Haji Hamdan Haji Marais’ Photo Collection’ showcasing a Sarawakiana collection of old photos of Sibu town and influential people significant to local history will be held at Pustaka Negeri Sarawak (PNS) on Jalan Tun Tunku Bujang by the Sungai Merah from tomorrow until July 31.

Hamdan Marais, the chairman of the local Warisan Kampung Datu and Persatuan Senibudaya Pertiwi, as well as a member of Gabungan Persatuan Bumiputera Sibu, has curated the remarkable collection.

His passion for capturing the essence of Sibu’s glorious past has resulted in an extensive collection spanning several decades, connecting the present to a bygone era.

Spectators are transported to a time when Sibu was transformed from a riverine village to a bustling trading post and to the vibrant town it is today.

The launching ceremony for the exhibition, in conjunction with the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF), will be held at its Children Infotheque at 2.30pm today (July 13).

PNS Sibu stated in a press release that Hamdan’s collection serves as a testament to the importance of valuing and cherishing local cultural heritage.

“It invites us to reflect on the past, appreciate the present, and forge a meaningful future for generations to come.”

The uniqueness of the exhibition lies not only in the collection but also in Hamdan’s untiring dedication to preserving these irreplaceable artifacts.

Each photograph has been painstakingly restored and preserved to ensure its longevity, creating an everlasting tribute to the town’s rich heritage. The Sarawakiana exhibition has gained considerable attention, drawing visitors from far and wide.

PNS Sibu will hold two other enriching cultural events, namely a talk on Rumah Panjang Melanau and a forum on ‘Tradisi Nguai Iban’, to be held on July 14 at 9am and July 15 at 9am, respectively, at its seminar room.

Hipani Alwi, the writer of Sarawakiana Series: The Melanau & The Longhouse of Kampung Sok, Matu, will take the participants on an insightful session on the fascinating world of Melanau longhouses through unique architecture filled with traditions and stories from the community.
