SIBU: Making their debut on the grand stage of the town’s annual event, the Borneo Cultural Festival (BCF) closing ceremony, the Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) Sape Ambassadors are brimming with excitement as they prepare to showcase their unique talents.

Armed with the enchanting sounds of the Sape, they aim not only to inspire the youth but also to promote unity in diversity, in line with the government’s catchphrase ‘Segulai Sejalai,’ which emphasises inclusivity and togetherness.

Selindang Sari Seliman, 21, an Orang Asli lady from Perak, said that she has full support from her community in her journey as a Sape player.

“My interest in string musical instruments was the reason why I joined the Sape Camp organised by YPS. I was also inspired by Alena Murang’s performance at Kuala Lumpur City Hall. That mesmerised me,” she said.

Selindang is all set to perform a song of her composition, showcasing her talent in both lyrics and melody.

Meanwhile, Gloria Lirek Joseph, a 23-year-old Punan lass from Bintulu, dauntlessly breaks the tradition that discourages women from playing the Sape in her culture.

“In Punan culture, we don’t encourage women to play Sape, but as I am very interested in Sape, I broke this tradition and learned Sape when I was 13,” she said.

Although the path was unconventional, she found strong support from her family, especially because there are few Punan who play the Sape nowadays.

Delphina Eda Alexander, a 20-year-old Bidayuh-Iban mix lady from Kuching, embarked on her Sape journey inspired by her grandfather.

The first Sape she ever played was crafted by her mother’s uncle, and from that moment on, she fell in love with the instrument.

“When I heard about the Sape camp, I did not hesitate and decided to join. Now I try to learn more about Sape,” she said.

The group will also be joined by two other talented members: Darren Mengga, an Iban lad from Kuching, and Harish Abdullah, a Melanau boy from Mukah, who are expected to arrive in town today.

The synergy of their different backgrounds and musical styles promises to create a truly captivating and unforgettable performance.

Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah is expected to officiate at the BCF closing ceremony today (July 23).

YPS is a non-profit organisation dedicated to nurturing and sustaining unity, harmony, and peaceful relationships among Sarawakian communities.

It was established on May 16, 1994, and is currently chaired by the Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.
