SIBU: The collaboration between the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and the SME Association of Sarawak (SME) will help to produce a trained workforce, especially in Sibu, said Professor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Abdul Hamid.
The UTS vice-chancellor said the university will develop the training content based on SME needs and deliver the programme to participants recruited by SMEs.
He said the partnership signifies the fusion of academic pursuit and practical application of knowledge and innovation.
“This collaboration holds the promise of bridging the gap between academic excellence and industrial relevance.
“We envision a symbiotic relationship wherein our students benefit from exposure to real-world challenges and experiences, and SMEs benefit from the fresh perspectives and cutting-edge research our institution can provide,” he said at the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony at UTS here today.
Khairuddin said the partnership will enhance the quality of the students’ education and equip them with the skills needed to excel in various industries, especially the construction sector.
“The commitment shown by the SME Association of Sarawak, under the leadership of its president and the dedication of its members, underscores the depth of our shared goals.
“I extend our heartfelt appreciation to them for believing in this partnership and its potential to shape our educational landscape,” he said.
Meanwhile, SME Sarawak president Jordan Ong Chung Siang said that the collaboration is a testament to the shared vision that both UTS and SME Sarawak hold.
“It underlines our commitment to nurturing a generation of professionals who are not only equipped with academic knowledge but are also skilled, adaptable, and industry-ready.
“By joining hands, we are embarking on a journey that promises to reshape education, empower our workforce, and drive innovation in ways that were previously unimaginable,” he said.
He stressed the significance of the collaboration goes beyond the MoU itself and represents the spirit of collaboration, progress, and a brighter future for the students, businesses, and the state.
The training programme includes marketing strategies and Adobe Photoshop for 25 participants each time.
It is for the association’s members and members of other associations under the Sarawak Business Federation as well as the general public.
Also present was Ideal Maker Limited Liability Partnership director Ronald Ng Kho Fatt and deputy vice-chancellor UTS Prof Dr Mohd Shahril Osman.
