BINTULU: A worker at a timber processing plant here lost one of his legs after reportedly slipping into a screw conveyor mechanism in a freak accident last week.
The accident, which occurred around 10.30 am on Aug 18, was confirmed by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Sarawak.
The worker, whose identity remains undisclosed, was starting his morning shift when the unfortunate incident occurred.
“He is believed to have slipped into the machine, resulting in the amputation of his leg from the toe to the knee. However, it was not known whether it was the right or left leg.
“Responding promptly, the victim’s colleagues halted the machine and rushed him to Nyabau Hospital for urgent medical attention,” the department said.
Following the incident, DOSH Bintulu branch promptly despatched a team to conduct an investigation.
The investigating officer later issued four notices detailing various offences to the employer.
The department asserted that should there be any violation under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 or the Factories and Machinery Act 1967, the responsible party will face legal consequences.
DOSH Sarawak is treating every workplace accident with utmost seriousness and all employers are strongly urged to elevate the standards of occupational safety and health within their workplaces, the department said.
