MIRI: A woman in her seventies fell victim to a fraudulent scheme here, losing RM10,000 in cash and jewelry.
In a statement the police said that the 70-year-old woman was targeted by two unknown men who approached her with false promises of welfare assistance and high-return investments.
The incident came to light after the woman’s 40-year-old daughter, a salon assistant, reported it to the authorities on August 23.
“The elderly woman was visited at her home by the two strangers, who tempted her with the idea of getting welfare support and making profitable investments that would bring big profits.”
Trusting these men, she shared personal information like her ID and bank details. She also gave them cash and jewellry worth about RM10,000.
“Taking advantage of her brief absence from the room, the suspects quickly took the money and jewellry while she went to the kitchen,” it said.
After understanding the situation, the woman came to know that she had fallen for a complex fraudulent scheme.
